She knew what she was doing throwing him into the lions den like that...she knew what it was like to be cornered and ready to answer on the spot questions....but see, this is how she had to do things. One important factor she was looking for was whether or not he could survive or would he run...flight or fight. And even when it's good to fly, she knew that fighting sometimes was worth it. She grabbed her purse and made her way for the outside. She didn't want to be around to hear the questions or see how he would respond to them. So...she did what any smart woman would do and left him to sort it out. She grabbed her glass of wine and swallowed a sip for confidence, found a chair and began a conversation herself.
He was left alone with their stares looking back, glaring up and down, taking in their own opinions and playing their own form of judge and jury. The little outspoken one looked at him, her eyes locked on his eyes and with guns blazing she asked, "What are your intentions?" This wasn't the first time she asked that question but for once she was hoping that the response would stick. She was hoping for her friend's sake, that by the end of the talk, all would make sense and worthwhile.
He looked back at her. Calm and collected as if the question didn't phase him...he knew all too well about answering those types of questions like: what are your plans now, what do you really want, and how do you plan on achieving it?
He took a breath in and before he finished his paused moment on contemplation she continued, "It's not that I'm assuming the worst in you but talk is cheap and when that girl talks....it's real and earnest...you have to understand why you are here?" He looked at her and shook his head yes. He knew he had seen his fair share of shit and with her the slate was clean. It started new with the beginning of each day. He was confident in this debate because he didn't doubt his feelings for her but how to convey that was going to be the tricky part.
Her curly headed, bubbly friend that had been a mixture of stories that night chimed in and added, "You know we have a tight crew and when something goes sour for one, we all feel it and that woman in there tends to feel it the most. So... if you want to just make this out to be nonchalant or just hang out and waste time while you figure things out then find someone else to do that with. With a heart that big, we'd be crazy not to protect it."
He looked at the woman's curly tendrils then looked into the woman's eyes, leaning in a little closer while simultaneously pulling his right hand to place where his heart sits and responded, "I understand and know what you me...she is very special and her heart is beautiful." The silent friend that listened mostly that night when everyone spoke asked to intervene. She reassured him they weren't trying to invade his space or get in their business but they wanted to like him as much as she did. The quiet friend laughed and said, "I have known her for so long and even if we aren't related she is my sister...she would do anything for me and if she falls in love with you, I hope you understand just how very special that is...she's not your average chic. Does that make sense? I mean, does this whole talk make any sense?"
He took it all in. All those words they spoke of the woman in conversation, made him finally understand what good was like. He looked around the room. He looked around at settings that he for the most part, was unfamiliar with. Then he saw one. She entered the house and smiled in his direction. She tilted her wine glass and mouthed the word "cheers." He knew at that moment what he needed to say.
He finally mustered up all he wanted to express without any interruptions. He stood taller and was filled with clear and concise confidence. He spoke with grace, pride and comfortably ease. The words were real and earnest as well and what he wanted to say rolled off his tongue like a sweet song that got made into a movie..
"I know that you all needed me to reassure you that my intentions with her are to make her happy, never make her sad, make her smile and wipe away the tears. I know you want me to be the knight in shining armour. Be the man that she has always deserved and wanted. Be the one that grows and sticks. I know just how wonderful and beautiful and smart she is...I know that her heart is big, true, and something to be appreciated and respected. I want to be with her and only her..she makes me smile and become a better person. The day isn't so hard with her in it. So ladies, while you look at me and wonder, I wonder myself but to be honest, the woman of my dreams just walked in the door and I would love to go tell her what I'm telling you now for myself."
